NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC AND REQUEST FOR INFORMATION

Subject to AS 38.05.850, the Northern Regional Land Office has received an application for the following:

APPLICANT:
Allegheny College

PROJECT NAME: LAS 35959

GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION: 70° 13' 44.62" N, 148° 25' 30.64" W

LEGAL DESCRIPTION: Township 10 North, Range 15 East, Section 7, Umiat Meridian.

REQUESTED ACTIVITY: To conduct research on the role of plant capillaries in the Arctic hydrological systems. Research methods will include measuring water levels, collecting water samples, soil moisture, identifying vegetation, vegetation biomass harvesting, and soil sampling.

Soil sampling will be using 1-inch diameter soil cores and restricted to the top 12 inches of the active layer or less. Biomass harvesting would be for aboveground biomass at roughly 20 sites across the study area. Sites will be in or near polygon troughs. Duplicate 20 x 50 cm quadrats (0.1 m²) of aboveground biomass will be clipped to ground level and removed, to be characterized for plant functional groups, Carbon: Nitrogen ratios, and biomass.

Water quality sensors may be deployed in the field while conducting field work in July/August.
