HEREFORD, Ariz. - The Yaqui Fire at Coronado National Memorial was contained on the evening of Sunday, May 17, 2026. The fire remains at 61 acres, with very little visible smoke and minimal fire activity.

The fire was first reported on Thursday, May 14, at approximately 1:17 p.m. Firefighters from the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and local assisting agencies responded quickly and worked together to contain the fire.

Over the weekend, all containment lines held through Red Flag wind conditions. Following successful containment, all firefighters and law enforcement from partner agencies were released Sunday evening and returned home. The fire is now being managed with local engines continuing regular patrols and monitoring throughout the week to ensure conditions remain stable. There are currently no evacuations in place.

Montezuma Pass Road and the Coronado Visitor Center remain open under regular operating hours. Joe's Canyon Trail and Coronado Peak Trail are closed to the public while park staff assess conditions to determine when they can safely reopen to the public. Trail closures will remain in place until safety assessments are complete.

Wildfire areas are always a No Drone Zone. Unauthorized drones can force aircraft to stop flying, delaying firefighting efforts and creating safety risks for firefighters and the public.

Smoke and air quality information are available at AirNow.gov.

Current conditions, closure information, and updates are available on the Coronado National Memorial website and official Facebook page.
