U.S. Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.) today released a statement in response to the devastating fire at Mother African Union Church in Wilmington, DE.
"Very sad news for Delawareans to wake up to this Sunday morning. Mother African Union church is a historic landmark and present-day conscience within our community. It is also a powerful symbol of liberation for Black Americans nationwide. The Mother Church has a rich history as a safe haven for African Americans to worship and build community, dating back to 1814. Its August Quarterly has brought people of African descent together in freedom and solidarity annually for centuries.
While I'm grateful that no one was physically hurt, I am mourning with Rev. Dr. Whitaker and the entire Mother African congregation, and pray that the God uplifts them in this difficult time and remind them that weeping may endure for a season, but joy is coming in the morning."
