CAMP ZAMA, Japan - Soldiers here hosted a community outreach event Oct. 3 to strengthen ties and build cross-cultural connections with local Japanese youth through a day of interactive games, a shared meal, and shared fellowship.

Soldiers and family members from the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program and the 78th Signal Battalion facilitated the event, which started at the installation's BOSS Warrior Zone. The group did indoor activities such as video games, air hockey and cornhole. After a barbecue lunch, everyone headed outdoors for active games, including tag and tug-of-war.

Initial worries about language barriers vanished as the children and Soldiers turned to translation apps on their phones.

"At first, I felt intimidated by the Soldiers and worried that we wouldn't be able to communicate," an 18-year-old participant said. "But once we started using the apps, communication became effortless. I realized we shared common interests and formed a bond with them almost instantly. Even though we come from different backgrounds, we're all human beings."

"It was a great collaboration between BOSS and the 78th Signal Battalion," BOSS President Sgt. Dillon Bruyer said. "We want to engage with our local community here and show a positive impact."

Bruyer noted that events like this offer Soldiers a meaningful way to give back while reflecting on their own support systems. Having been raised by his grandparents, Bruyer emphasized how working with young people reinforces the collaboration of family and community connections.

Judging by the smiles, the joint initiative succeeded in building stronger bonds between Camp Zama and the local community.
