Denim Day 2026

WHEREAS, Denim Day originated in April 1999 as a symbol of protest in response to an Italian high court decision that overturned a rape conviction on the grounds that the victim was wearing tight denim pants; and

WHEREAS, Denim Day is intended to draw attention to the ongoing prevalence of rape and sexual assault, and to acknowledge the profound impact these violent crimes have on survivors as well as their families, loved ones, coworkers, and the health professionals who support them; and

WHEREAS, no one has the right to force, threaten, or manipulate anyone into sexual activity and every Alaskan, regardless of age, race, culture, or background, deserves to live free from harm and the fear of sexual assault or abuse; and

WHEREAS, survivors of sexual assault often experience lasting emotional, physical, and psychological scars including depression and anxiety, struggles with substance abuse, suicidal thoughts or self-harm, difficulties maintaining healthy relationships, and low self-esteem; and

WHEREAS, the State of Alaska remains committed to raising awareness to prevent sexual assaults, and to increase support for victims and survivors.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Mike Dunleavy, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim April 29, 2026, as:

Denim Day

in Alaska and ask that all Alaskans wear denim for the day to stand united against sexual assault. We must speak out against victim-blaming and create a culture of respect, equality, and safety.
