Pennacchio Bill to Expand Access to Free Credit Reports Passes Senate

The New Jersey Senate advanced legislation sponsored by Senator Joe Pennacchio (R-Morris, Passaic) to give consumers greater access to their credit reports and help them monitor their financial health.

"Easy, free access to credit reports is essential," said Sen. Pennacchio. "From preventing fraud to ensuring financial wellbeing, enshrining the ability to get at least nine free credit reports per year gives New Jerseyans the information necessary to keep their financial house in order."

The bill, S-1322, would require consumer reporting agencies to provide consumers with a free credit report three times during any 12-month period upon request, increasing the current requirement of one free report per year. While these agencies currently offer one free report per week, there is no legal requirement for them to do so.
