Mariposa County - The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has extended the temporary full-closure of State Route 140 (SR-140) through Friday, April 24, 2026, to perform needed rock scaling work in the aftermath of storm activity this week.
On Monday, April 20, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) issued a temporary full-closure of SR-140 from the Yosemite Bug in Midpines to the Yosemite Cedar Lodge in Incline due to slope conditions with forecasted low temperatures and heavy rain.
Upon inspection of the slope today, our Caltrans geotechnical experts have recommended scaling work for the immediate removal of compromised material prior to safely reopening the highway to the traveling public. As such Caltrans & CHP will be extending the temporary closure through Friday (4/24/26) to perform the needed scaling, debris removal, and highway repair work.
Caltrans aims to safely re-open the highway to motorists prior to weekend travel and will be providing real-time updates via our social media accounts, news releases, and through our Caltrans QuickMap app for mobile devices. Motorists will be provided with closure and detour route updates with use of overhead changeable message signs (CMS) along State Routes, along with weekly traffic advisories.
In the meantime, Caltrans is asking motorists to avoid this stretch of highway until scaling work is finished, to exercise patience, and seek alternative detour routes along SR-41 and SR-120 into Yosemite National Park. Caltrans' top priority in this situation is the safety of the traveling public, our partner agencies, staff, and the contractor performing the debris removal and highway repairs.
Motorists should expect 5-to-10-minute delays and use alternate routes whenever possible. All work is scheduled to occur as listed but is subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment/materials, and construction-related issues.
For the safety of workers and other motorists, please Be Work Zone Alert. Caltrans also reminds motorists to #KnowBeforeYouGo by checking QuickMaps on your mobile device or visit quickmap.dot.ca.gov for real-time highway conditions.
