Another Bill Allowing Pornographic Material In Schools

IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OCTOBER 27, 2025

Yet another out-of-touch bill being brought forward by Senate Democrats - this one involving New Mexico children

Santa Fe, NM - This upcoming legislative session, Senators Pope and Sedillo-Lopez are expected to introduce another controversial bill that would allow violent, explicit, and pornographic content in New Mexico schools. Representative Kathleen Cates is also promoting this bill. While banning inappropriate material from school libraries is considered to be a common-sense issue, this is not the first time this bill has been introduced in New Mexico; Democrats brought it forward last year, but, due to harsh pushback from Republicans, it died in the Senate Judiciary Committee. New Mexico Democrats are following the example of other woke states that have introduced similar legislation, including California, Illinois, and Maryland.

"Protecting children from harm is the most basic responsibility our elected leaders have, and Democrats are failing egregiously by pushing for this bill," said Chairwoman Barela. "There is no middle ground on this: sexualized, pornographic content in New Mexico schools will never be acceptable."

There are currently books in New Mexico public schools that detail rape, sex acts involving children, drug use, suicidal behaviors, and horrific violent imagery. See examples here.

This comes at a time when public education in New Mexico is at an all-time low. This year, U.S. News & World Report ranked New Mexico 50th in education. New Mexico is widely regarded to have the worst public education system in the country, and rather than focusing on student outcomes, teacher recruitment, or the absentee crisis in our schools, New Mexico Democrats are choosing to allow harmful reading material in school libraries. This bill is anti-parent, anti-family, and has no place in New Mexico.
