Amid Shutdown, Bean Refuses Congressional Pay

WASHINGTON-Although the U.S. Constitution requires Members of Congress to receive pay during a government shutdown under Article 1, Section 6, Clause 1, U.S. Congressman Aaron Bean (FL-04) is refusing his paycheck. Today, he sent a letter to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Catherine Szpindor, requesting that his pay be withheld until the government is funded.

"I cannot in good conscience receive compensation during the shutdown while our American service members, air traffic controllers, and homeland defenders go without pay, nor while Northeast Floridians endure a disruption to essential services from federal agencies. That's why I am withholding my pay until Senate Democrats vote on the House bill to reopen our government."
