Lame Deer man sentenced to 3 years in prison for beating teen with baseball bat

BILLINGS - A Lame Deer man who repeatedly struck a teenage boy with a baseball bat was sentenced today to three years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, U.S. Attorney Scott Twito said.

Cameron Charles Backer, 38, pleaded guilty in June 2026 to assault with a deadly weapon and assault resulting in serious bodily injury.

U.S. District Judge Kathleen S. Lane presided.

The government alleged in court documents that Backer beat a teenage boy over the head with a baseball bat on Aug. 8, 2025, as the teen was fighting with another person. The assault left the teen with head lacerations that required 20 stitches and an ankle fracture.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jacob Yerger prosecuted the case. The FBI and BIA conducted the investigation.
