Near-Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision (Updated to Fatal)

UPDATE:

On Friday, October 24, 2025, at approximately 4:00 p.m., the bicyclist succumbed to his injuries and died while at Maui Memorial Medical Center. The bicyclistis identified as Richard Holland (79), of Kihei.

The Maui Police Department extends our deepest condolences to Mr. Holland's family and friends.

This is Maui County's 14th traffic fatality of 2025, compared to 13 at the same time last year.

ORIGINAL:

On Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at approximately 7:22 a.m., a motor vehicle collision occurred at the intersection of Kanani Road and Auhana Road in Kihei.

Preliminary investigations reveal that a white 2024 Ford F-150 was traveling east on Kanani Road, making a left turn towards the highway, when it collided into an electric assisted bicycle that was traveling west on Auhana Road at the intersection with Kanani Road.

As a result of the collision, the bicyclist, a 79-year-old Kihei male, was ejected from the bicycle and sustained critical life-threatening injuries and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment, where he currently remains in critical condition.

The operator of the Ford, a 40-year-old Kihei male, remained on the scene and was not injured; his three juvenile passengers were also uninjured.

The 40-year-old Kihei male was arrested for the offense of Negligent Injury in the First Degree and transported to the Wailuku Police Station for booking and processing without incident, and was released pending investigation.

Investigation reveals that:

The bicyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.

The occupants of the Ford were reportedly wearing their seatbelts.

The involvement of speed is not considered a factor in this collision.

The involvement of drugs or alcohol has not been determined as the investigation is still ongoing.
