ATLANTA (October 23, 2026) - Sen. Chuck Payne (R-Dalton), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans, Military and Homeland Security, has been nominated to serve on the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Military and Veterans Affairs Task Force.
The nomination was extended by Senate President Pro Tempore Larry Walker, III (R-Perry), who cited Sen. Payne's background as a U.S. Army veteran and lifelong commitment to public service as valuable qualifications for representing Georgia in national policy discussions.
"I am honored to receive this nomination and grateful for the opportunity to bring Georgia's perspective to the national conversation surrounding our military and veterans," said Sen. Payne. "My time in the United States Army taught me lessons about sacrifice and service that have stayed with me throughout my life. As legislators, we have a responsibility to ensure that those who have worn our nation's uniform, along with the families who stand beside them, receive the care and consideration they have earned. I look forward to working alongside my colleagues from across the country to build on the great work already being done in our states."
The NCSL Military and Veterans Affairs Task Force brings together lawmakers from across the nation to develop bipartisan policies addressing the needs of military personnel, veterans and their families. Its work focuses on strengthening military-community partnerships, improving access to mental health and substance abuse support, and ensuring military benefits are delivered effectively.
Founded in 1975, NCSL represents state legislators and legislative staff across the nation's 50 states, commonwealths, territories and the District of Columbia. The organization supports state legislatures by encouraging collaboration and information sharing, and by promoting effective legislative institutions nationwide.
Sen. Payne was a member of the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division from 1984 to 1988. He has also served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans, Military and Homeland Security since 2024.
