After visiting Jeddah, the President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, travelled to Doha today, where she was received by the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
President Meloni first of all thanked the Emir for the assistance provided in the evacuation of numerous Italian citizens, especially tourists in transit, who wanted to leave Qatar at the beginning of the conflict. She also reaffirmed the message of solidarity she wished to express with her presence, in the face of Iran's attacks against Qatar.
President Meloni and the Emir discussed the ongoing diplomatic efforts to overcome the crisis and ensure a sustainable regional security architecture.
The two leaders then had an in-depth discussion on energy matters, also in light of the consolidated relationship between Italy and Qatar in this field, exchanging views on possible actions to mitigate the shocks experienced. In this context, President Meloni provided assurance of Italy's readiness - through the excellence of its production system - to contribute to the rehabilitation of Qatari energy infrastructure, which is fundamental for global energy security. It was also reiterated that it is urgent and necessary to ensure freedom of navigation through Hormuz.
President Meloni and Sheikh Tamim lastly agreed to work together to further develop cooperation and joint investments, in order to strengthen all aspects of security, above all in the strategic areas of defence, critical infrastructure, food security and multilateral cooperation for the management of migration along the Mediterranean routes.
