Rep. Watson Coleman Introduces Resolution Condemning All Forms of Hate

Today, Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12) announced the introduction of a Resolution Condemning All Forms of Hate, emphasizing the importance of an inclusive democracy and rejecting hateful discourse targeted at vulnerable populations. This resolution condemns all representations of discrimination, including racism, islamophobia, antisemitism, transphobia, homophobia, sexism, ageism, xenophobia, ableism, and ethnic or religious bigotry.

Just a few weeks ago, two men in Idaho were aggressively beaten and verbally accosted for being in a same-sex relationship. These are not just standalone cases, and they are not limited to just one group. Just this past month, at a family gathering in Georgia, a man armed with an AR-15 rifle opened fire on 20 Black children and adults after verbally accosting them with racial slurs. These actions against our neighbors, in our communities, are unacceptable. Every person has the right to exist freely, without fear.

"This resolution comes at a critical time when incidents of violence and harmful behavior have been on the rise," said Watson Coleman. "Hatred has no place in our communities, our country, or our world. We must stand together against bigotry, racism, and intolerance. Let this resolution serve as a powerful message that reflects the values of compassion and empathy that are essential for building a more just and equitable society and a small reminder that it is imperative upon all individuals, communities, and institutions to actively reject hate and work towards fostering an environment of understanding and acceptance."

Specifically, this resolution:

• Denounces all representations of discrimination including racism, islamophobia, antisemitism, transphobia, heterosexism, homophobia, sexism, ageism, xenophobia, ableism, and ethnic or religious bigotry

• Supports the implementation of comprehensive policies to prevent and respond to hate crimes, including education and training on prevention and response, state and federal intervention, and acknowledgment of the challenges facing vulnerable groups

• Reassures victims' advocacy with communication support, incident reporting, physical and mental health resources, legal representation, and response and recovery

• Supports funding for programs that are culturally and linguistically accessible and resources for community-based organizations that reflect the experiences of vulnerable populations.

• Upholds the federal government's promise to combat all forms of hate, bigotry, and violence

This resolution is cosponsored by Representatives Eleanor Holmes Norton (DC-AL), Hank Johnson (GA-04), Jennifer McClellan (VA-04), Jonathan Jackson (IL-01), and Shri Thanedar (MI-13).
