LEARNING BY DESIGN: USM@KL POSITIONS INSTRUCTIONAL MULTIMEDIA AS A DRIVER OF EDUCATIONAL INNOVATION

KUALA LUMPUR, 3 July 2026 - As education continues to evolve beyond conventional classroom boundaries, instructional multimedia has emerged as a vital force in shaping more engaging, accessible and effective learning experiences.

Reflecting this shift, the Master of Instructional Multimedia at Universiti Sains Malaysia Kuala Lumpur (USM@KL) attracted encouraging interest from prospective students during the USM@KL Open Day, offering visitors a closer look at how technology and creativity can be combined to transform learning in schools, higher education, professional training and lifelong learning environments.

The programme was among the postgraduate offerings featured at the Open Day, where visitors engaged with academic representatives to explore the growing role of instructional design, multimedia technologies and digital learning strategies in meeting the needs of today's learners.

Designed to respond to the changing landscape of education and training, the programme integrates instructional design, multimedia development, educational technology and learning sciences. It equips students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills to design learner-centred educational experiences that are interactive, meaningful and impact-driven.

According to Dr. Chau Kien Tsong, Programme Coordinator for the Master of Instructional Multimedia at USM@KL, the programme prepares students to become professionals who are able to design learning with purpose, creativity and measurable impact.

He said that through structured coursework, practical exposure and research-informed learning, students are guided to apply multimedia and instructional design principles in ways that enhance teaching, improve learner engagement and support innovation across diverse educational and professional settings.

Throughout the Open Day, visitors received personalised academic consultations and admissions guidance while gaining deeper insights into the programme's curriculum, research opportunities and career pathways in instructional design, educational technology and multimedia development.

Graduates of the programme are well positioned to pursue careers as instructional designers, educational technologists, e-learning specialists, multimedia developers, learning consultants and academic professionals across schools, higher education institutions, government agencies and corporate organisations.

Through the Master of Instructional Multimedia, USM@KL continues to contribute to the development of skilled professionals who can design effective and engaging learning experiences for diverse educational and professional settings.
