Chancellor Singh reflects on UW–Oshkosh's contribution to Northeast Wisconsin's prosperity

Following the 2026 New North Summit, Dr. Manohar Singh, chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, reflected on how higher education institutions underpin regional collaboration to advance economic growth.

UW-Oshkosh Chancellor Dr. Manohar Singh participated recently in discussions with regional leaders at the 2026 New North Summit at Lambeau Field in Green Bay to develop a more nuanced understanding of the nexus between strategic collaboration, workforce development and regional competitiveness.

The interactions yielded strategic insights into how the university can more deliberately align institutional resources and organizational capabilities with the region's shared aspirations.

What motivated your participation in the 2026 New North Summit and what perspectives were you seeking?

Singh: Institutional relevance is sustained by remaining grounded and attuned to the imperatives redefining the communities, industries and economies of which we are a part. For universities, that requires continuously understanding where education, workforce development, innovation and regional priorities converge.

The New North Summit provides a strategic vantage point from which UW-Oshkosh can anticipate emerging regional priorities and apply those insights to institutional initiatives.

What would have been the strategic implications for UW-Oshkosh had the university not participated in the 2026 New North Summit?

Singh: The New North Summit crystallized an important realization: UW-Oshkosh's institutional legacy is made tangible through the leadership its graduates, alumni and partners continue to demonstrate across Northeast Wisconsin. Laurie Butz, UWO alumna who is chief executive officer of Capital Credit Union and New North board member-a recipient of the 2025 Workplace Excellence Award-exemplifies how that legacy finds expression in collaborations that strengthen organizations and communities across the region.

How does the mission of the 2026 New North Summit complement UW-Oshkosh's Infinite Impact initiatives and strategic vision?

Singh: At its core, the New North Summit is a forum for cross-sector collaboration. Its enduring significance derives from creating an enabling environment where complementary perspectives, expertise and resources coalesce to forge strategic partnerships, establish shared priorities and advance a shared vision for a more competitive, resilient and prosperous region.

For UW-Oshkosh, this philosophy reflects the essence of Infinite Impact-recognizing that strategic partnerships are fundamental to advancing meaningful outcomes for students, employers and communities.

Ultimately, the summit reinforces the idea that the region's fullest potential is realized when institutional boundaries become points of connection rather than points of separation.
