New KDOT program to allow open access to broadband infrastructure

The Kansas Department of Transportation is now accepting applications for the Open Access Broadband Program, which was established to help expand broadband access across the state by making it easier for public and private partners to use transportation infrastructure for broadband projects.

The program allows broadband providers to access KDOT-owned infrastructure, such as conduit, vaults and other facilities located within the highway right of way. By using existing infrastructure, when possible, the program can help lower costs and accelerate broadband deployment.

A webinar is set for 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, to discuss how KDOT will share the broadband infrastructure where available with industry. Register in advance for a link to attend the event.

"Connecting the state's infrastructure with high quality and reliable broadband is a huge benefit as it directly impacts industries, schools and people," said Secretary Calvin Reed. "Providing enhanced access to expanding and increasing opportunities will help strengthen and support citizens and communities across the state."

Partners are expected to share the cost of ongoing system use to cover maintenance and operation based on their use of the system.

For an application or more information on the program, go to KDOT's Open Access Broadband website or contact Michael Flory, Broadband Program Manager, at [email protected].
