OAQDA Financing Strengthens Building Infrastructure Upgrades and Job Growth at Southpaw Enterprises in Montgomery County

COLUMBUS - The Ohio Air Quality Development Authority (OAQDA) is helping one of Montgomery County's long-standing small businesses take a big step forward. Southpaw Enterprises creates life-changing products for therapists, educators, and families from its manufacturing facility in Moraine, Ohio. Now, the small business is making an important investment in its own operations, one that will improve infrastructure, save money, support workforce growth, and boost the local economy.

With the help of $2 million in bond financing from OAQDA, Southpaw will upgrade the roof infrastructure at its 37-year-old facility to improve building performance. The project will include onsite solar technology and better insulated materials to reduce operating costs, modernize the facility, and free up financial resources to reinvest in its mission-driven work.

"This is an investment in the long-term strength of our business and our team," said Alex Moore, president of Southpaw Enterprises. "When we can reduce costs and improve our facility, we can put more into the people, products, and services that help us grow and serve our customers."

The project will stabilize the manufacturing skilled workforce at Southpaw while also creating six part-time construction jobs during installation in Montgomery County. By lowering energy expenses, the company will have greater financial flexibility to expand its reach and remain competitive in a global marketplace within its industry, as well as serve more customers in need of its adaptive and multi-sensory products.

"Many projects financed by OAQDA have tremendous impact into delivering greater benefits to communities and Ohio families," said Christina O'Keeffe, executive director of OAQDA. "Southpaw is the latest example of this important work by supporting small businesses to modernize, operate more efficiently, retain and grow their workforce, and reinvest that cost savings into doing more to help their communities. In this case, people in need of quality therapeutic products."

"By financing infrastructure upgrades like this one, we're not only reducing costs for Southpaw Enterprises, we're investing in the health of our local workforce, creating jobs, and fueling long-term economic growth right here in Montgomery County," said Senator Willis E. Blackshear Jr. (D-Dayton).

"Continued support and investment in an innovative company like Southpaw Enterprises is imperative to the continued growth in our region and in the state of Ohio," said State Representative Tom Young (R-Washington Twp). "Southpaw's intuitive approach in their product development will assist in sustaining an industry that is important to our citizens."

This project was approved by the OAQDA through the Clean Air Improvement Program (CAIP), which is a platform that enables communities and businesses to access financial assistance from lenders, investors, and other capital providers for clean air projects. By reducing upfront costs and improving cash flow, CAIP helps projects across Ohio move forward with greater financial certainty and achieve long-term economic benefits for businesses and communities.
