Waste Reduction and Women’s Empowerment: Airbnb Supports Yayasan R.O.L.E.

Airbnb announced the latest recipients of the Airbnb Community Fund, with Yayasan R.O.L.E. (Role Foundation) in Indonesia among this year's recipients.

Launched in 2020, the Airbnb Community Fund is a USD 100 million initiative designed to support local communities and the people who live there. In 2025, the Airbnb Community Fund donated nearly USD 10 million to nonprofits globally, supporting organizations that strengthen communities worldwide.

Airbnb hosts are deeply connected to their communities, and each year we proudly partner with the host community to identify important issues and many of the nonprofit organizations that will receive donations. Yayasan ROLE was nominated by the Indonesia Airbnb Host Community, and local hosts have engaged with the foundation through beach cleanups, coral restoration efforts, school visits, and sustainability education events - with plans to continue and deepen these engagements.

Supporting waste management and empowering marginalized women in Bali

Based in Bali, Yayasan R.O.L.E. focuses on environmental education, zero-waste initiatives, and skills training for women and youth on the island, delivering practical solutions that expand economic opportunities while addressing environmental issues.

Airbnb's donation will support Yayasan R.O.L.E.'s work in helping women from marginalized backgrounds break the poverty cycle by educating and training them so they can find employment in the hospitality sector. Yayasan R.O.L.E. also protects Bali's environment through waste management training and community education for local governments, businesses, and households, reducing the amount of waste entering Bali's rivers and oceans.

Amanpreet Bajaj, Country Head, Airbnb Southeast Asia and India, said, "Airbnb believes destinations are at their best when local communities are strong. We are proud to support the meaningful work Yayasan R.O.L.E. is doing to create economic opportunities for women, while also protecting the environments that communities and travelers rely on. Locally-driven programs like these are essential for the sustainable growth of tourism destinations like Bali."

Handoko Rama, Chief Operating Officer of R.O.L.E. Foundation, shared, "Educating one woman is akin to educating a whole community. This support will enable us to equip even more young women with the skills they need for quality employment and environmental stewardship, through our Bali WISE and ZeroWaste skills centers. Receiving the Airbnb Community Fund donation is a true honor and a powerful endorsement of our mission. "

Kadek Adi Putra, an Airbnb Host Community Leader in Indonesia who nominated Yayasan R.O.L.E., said, "Waste management remains one of the most pressing environmental challenges in our country, especially on the island of Bali. The R.O.L.E. Foundation, through its Zero Waste Centre, directly addresses this issue by providing ecological education and hands-on waste management training to local governments, businesses, communities, and individuals. This knowledge empowers people to apply sustainable practices in their work and daily lives, ultimately reducing landfill use and preventing waste from ending up in rivers and oceans."

Globally, Host Advisory Board members helped select economic empowerment, sustainable and rural tourism, environmental sustainability, and ending abuse and exploitation as focus areas for this year's donations. They also reviewed nominations in their regions, bringing host perspective to every decision.
