UL Solutions Launches New Evaluation Services to Advance Safer, More Efficient Battery Energy Storage Deployment

  • Helps battery energy storage manufacturers and project owners demonstrate how fire and explosion risks have been evaluated under applicable NFPA requirements
  • Brings real-world insights to explosion prevention and protection using system-specific data
  • Provides technical information that can streamline code authority approvals of BESS installations
  • Expands existing UL Solutions battery energy storage system testing and certification services to help streamline installation approvals and address key permitting challenges

NORTHBROOK, Ill., June 22, 2026 - UL Solutions (NYSE: ULS), a global leader in applied safety science, today launched new evaluation services to help battery energy storage system (BESS) manufacturers, developers and integrators address National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) requirements for mitigating fire and deflagration hazards.

"Energy storage systems are growing in scale and importance," said Ken Boyce, vice president of Principal Engineering at UL Solutions. "Manufacturers, developers, integrators and other stakeholders involved in energy storage system deployment need clear, science-based support to evaluate risk, organize documentation and move through the approval process with confidence."

Battery energy storage has expanded rapidly across the United States. As of June 2026, about 1,010 utility-scale projects totaling 48.6 gigawatts were in operation. Utility-scale capacity surpassed 26 gigawatts in 2024, up 66 percent from 2023, was 57.6 gigawatts in 2025 and is expected to reach more than 600 gigawatts by 2030. These systems store excess renewable energy, shift electricity during periods of higher demand and support grid reliability as solar and wind generation grows.

As battery energy storage projects scale, stakeholders face growing pressure to demonstrate that systems are designed and documented to mitigate fire spread and deflagration hazards. UL Solutions' new evaluation services help simplify this process, improve project readiness and strengthen technical packages for local code authorities.

These evaluation services supplement UL Solutions existing battery energy storage system testing and certification capabilities, including UL 9540, the Standard for Energy Storage Systems and Equipment, and UL 9540A, the Test Method for Evaluating Thermal Runaway Fire Propagation in Battery Energy Storage Systems.

NFPA is a U.S.-based nonprofit that develops widely used fire, electrical and life safety codes and standards. These are often adopted into local building and fire codes, directly shaping how projects are designed, evaluated and approved. UL Solutions' new evaluation services support work related to NFPA 855, the Standard for the Installation of Stationary Energy Storage Systems. The evaluation services provide data to demonstrate alignment with NFPA 855 requirements, as well as with explosion protection and prevention requirements addressed in NFPA 68 (deflagration venting) and NFPA 69 (explosion prevention systems).

Specifically, UL Solutions provides an NFPA 855 assessment that identifies gaps, documents findings and strengthens justification packages for code authorities' review. For NFPA 68 and NFPA 69, customers receive detailed engineering reports that include modeling, simulation-based analysis and expert interpretation of explosion risk and safety performance. These services include virtual sessions with UL Solutions technical specialists to review results.

By integrating evaluation, simulation, testing and certification, UL Solutions helps stakeholders identify a clearer, more efficient path to compliance and project approval.
