Understanding Climate Risks Through an Intersectional Approach: Final reflection workshop

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change identifies intersectionality as fundamental for just and equitable climate change adaptation. While there is growing recognition that an intersectional approach is needed to reach the people most at risk from the impacts of climate change, it remains unclear how to apply intersectionality in practice.

Over the past year and a half, the International Institute for Sustainable Development has partnered with Urban Earth, Prakriti Resources Centre, Tewa-Women's Fund in Nepal, Community Development & Advocacy Forum Nepal, Triangle Project, and Western Cape Association of and for Persons with Disabilities, to conduct intersectional CRAs in Mardhar, a rural community in Mithila municipality in Nepal, and Elsies River, a neighbourhood in Cape Town, South Africa. The research provided important insights into the ways in which structural barriers associated with systems of inequity lead to conditions that increase vulnerability to climate change. It also tested a methodology for intersectional CRA, yielding learning that can inform adaptation policy and practice in the future.

The final reflection workshop brings together all of the partners involved to review and make sense of the findings, reflect on the research process, and identify future directions for intersectional CRA. The workshop will take place August 25-27, in Kathmandu, Nepal.
