Defendant Convicted of Carjacking at Gunpoint, Police Chase

On July 2, 2026, Jimmy Syhathep was convicted by a jury of carjacking, felon in possession of a firearm, evading officers and hit and run. The jury also found true a firearm allegation and aggravating factors.

On January 16, 2023, Jimmy Syhathep carjacked a driver at gunpoint. Traffic cameras captured the stolen vehicle traveling through the intersection of Stockton Boulevard and Fruitridge Road. Law enforcement officers located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. Syhathep sped away, prompting a pursuit involving both Sacramento Police officers and Sheriff's deputies. During the three-mile chase, Syhathep drove with willful and wanton disregard for the safety of other drivers. The pursuit ended when he abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. A sheriff's K9 officer ultimately apprehended him. A firearm was found underneath an RV that Syhathep had run past, and an extended magazine was located in his pocket.

Syhathep faces a maximum sentence of 30 years and 8 months in prison. Sentencing is set for August 14, 2026, at 9:00 AM in Department 9D before the Honorable Allison Williams.
