Celebrating Black History Month in New Brunswick

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ (February 6, 2026) - Every February, we observe Black History Month to honor the incredible achievements, deep-rooted history, and ongoing contributions of African Americans. It is a time to reflect on the stories that have shaped our nation and to find inspiration for the future.

In New Brunswick, we have a vibrant lineup of events that celebrate Black culture, art, and history. Check out how you can get involved:

Jazz Fans: Music fans can start their celebrations at Tavern on George every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 7 p.m. The New Brunswick Jazz Project is dedicating its Thursday night sessions throughout the month to showcasing talented Black musicians, bringing world-class jazz to New Brunswick. (Fun fact: New Brunswick is the birthplace of James Price Johnson, called "The Father of Harlem Stride." As a pioneer of the stride piano, he was key in the evolution of ragtime into jazz.)

Pan-African Flag Raising Ceremony and Event: On Feb. 6 the Pan-African Flag will be raised at 5 p.m. in front of the Middlesex County Administration Building, 75 Bayard St. Following the ceremony, the celebration moves to the third floor of the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center, 11 Livingston Ave., from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. for a cultural program hosted by the New Brunswick Department of Human and Community Services.

SparkNight Event: Art and creativity take center stage on Feb. 12 at the Zimmerli Art Museum, 71 Hamilton St., from 5 to 8 p.m., featuring a lively evening featuring live music, hands-on art activities, and complimentary refreshments and mocktails.

Revolution NJ250 Black History Month Event: On Feb. 14 at 2 p.m., the New Brunswick Free Public Library, 60 Livingston Ave., presents "An African American Patriot's Experience." Steven Thomas will present a unique look at the American Revolution, appearing in the uniform of a Patriot piper to share the history of the challenges and choices facing African Americans during the birth of our nation.
