Meet the Librarian Bringing Woodworking and Creativity to the Library

At the Clearwater Main Library, Librarian Thomas Shepherd leads patrons through the careful, hands-on process of shaping wood, turning the Creation Studio into a space where craftsmanship, learning and creativity come together.

Shepherd leads the library's monthly Woodworking Projects program, a hands-on class designed for adults of all skill levels. Each month, a new project is offered across three separate classes with each session limited to seven participants. Projects are designed to be completed within a two-hour class and introduce participants to traditional hand-tool woodworking in a welcoming and supportive environment.

"We make items out of a variety of woods using many different techniques. Each project is designed to be completed within the two-hour class. We've built tool boxes, carved spoons, cutting boards, desk organizers and more," Shepherd said.

Woodworking has been part of Shepherd's life since adolescence. Over the years, he has continued developing his skills by studying fine art, including sculpture, working in construction and as a handyman and by continually expanding his knowledge as a craftsman. After becoming a librarian, Shepherd brought his background to the Clearwater Public Library System where he has worked for more than a decade and introduced a wide range of creative and educational programs to the community.

In each woodworking class, Shepherd emphasizes not only technique but also the deeper traditions behind the craft.

"In each class, we focus on a specific hand tool or process. A really fun element of this is discussing history, trivia and lore around a technique or tool as we work," he said.

The woodworking program began in Fall 2024 and has continued to grow. In addition to the monthly classes, the library now offers woodworking lab time where makers can continue projects started in class, bring their own materials, receive tool demonstrations and collaborate with other participants.

Woodworking is just one part of the library's expanding Maker programming which offers patrons multiple ways to explore hands-on creativity. On the fourth floor, the library hosts an ongoing 3D printing program where patrons can submit 3D print requests or receive one-on-one assistance with their own 3D printing projects. The program supports beginners and experienced makers alike helping patrons turn digital designs into physical objects.

The library also offers an Open Art Studio held twice weekly on Mondays and Tuesdays. This drop-in program is a collaborative, team-led effort supported by the entire Maker Team providing a flexible and welcoming space for patrons to experiment with materials, work on personal projects and connect with others in a creative environment.

For Shepherd, the most meaningful moments come from seeing participants gain confidence in their abilities.

"My favorite part is when a beginner or someone who thought they couldn't work wood realizes that they can develop the skills needed to complete the project and that they have a creative and original voice as a maker," he said. "I also enjoy when a more experienced woodworker learns something new or makes progress in a project in a way that inspires others."

Open to adults ages 16 and older, Woodworking Projects welcomes participants of all experience levels from complete beginners to experienced woodworkers.

"Hand tool woodworking can connect makers with materials and craft in an incredibly fulfilling way and this program can be enjoyed by adults of all skill levels and abilities," Shepherd said.

"If you always wanted to try working with wood and/or reconnect with skills like this or are simply curious about making, Woodworking at the Clearwater Public Library is a great place to start!"
