Fourth Meeting of the Nepal-Canada Bilateral Consultation Mechanism

The Fourth Meeting of the Nepal-Canada Bilateral Consultation Mechanism (BCM) concluded in Kathmandu today.

The two sides reviewed the entire gamut of bilateral relations and expressed satisfaction over the longstanding friendship and cooperation subsisting between Nepal and Canada ever since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1965. They reaffirmed commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations and continued cooperation on areas of mutual interest.

The discussions during the meeting covered political relations, trade and investment, development cooperation and priorities, education, climate change, clean energy, agriculture, information technology, people-to-people ties and consular matters.

The Nepali side highlighted the Government's ongoing economic reform programmes and efforts to create a more enabling climate for foreign investment and private sector engagement.

The Canadian side appreciated Nepal's efforts to create conducive investment climate through reforms. Canada also acclaimed Nepal's leading role in climate agenda, electric vehicles, green energy, rural electrification as well as Nepal's continued commitment to democratic governance, sustainable development and economic transformation.

The two delegations also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest, including climate action, peacekeeping, human rights and cooperation in multilateral forums, including the United Nations. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to working together to address shared global challenges.

The meeting was held in a cordial and constructive atmosphere, reflecting the close and friendly ties between Nepal and Canada. Both sides agreed to continue regular consultations with a view to further expand and deepen the bilateral partnership in the days ahead.

The meeting was co-chaired by Mr Dilip Kumar Paudel, Joint Secretary and Head of the North and South America Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal, and Mr Jean-Christian Brillant, Director General for South Asia Bureau, Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development of Canada.

The Nepali delegation included officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other relevant sectoral ministries, while the Canadian delegation included H.E. Mark Allen, Deputy Ambassador of Canada, Dr. Buddha Basnyat, Honorary Consul of Canada in Nepal and Ms Tejdeep Kaur, Senior Economic Officer of the Embassy of Canada in New Delhi.

The Memorandum of Understanding to establish the Bilateral Consultation Mechanism between Nepal and Canada was signed in September 2018.

The next meeting of the Mechanism will be held in Canada on a date mutually convenient to both sides.
