Dr. Seth Barrett Receives William Rainey Harper Award for Outstanding Scholarship

For Barrett, scholarship is not measured simply by publications or research achievements. Instead, it begins with curiosity.

"Scholarship is continuous curiosity," Barrett said. "It's the pursuit of understanding-even when things don't work the way you expected."

That mindset has shaped both his research and his teaching throughout his career. Barrett encourages students to view mistakes not as failures, but as opportunities to learn, believing that curiosity has far greater value than perfection.

"I'd rather students learn something meaningful than simply earn the perfect grade," he said.

His love of science began long before college. As a middle school student, Barrett vividly remembers watching a classroom experiment that transformed ordinary bubbles into something extraordinary. The demonstration sparked a fascination with understanding how the world works-a fascination that eventually led him to study chemistry and pursue a career in higher education.

Although research has always been part of his work, Barrett knew he wanted to teach at a smaller institution where close relationships with students would remain at the center of the experience. After graduate school, he briefly taught elsewhere before recognizing that the community he had been searching for was the one he already knew best.

"A school like Muskingum," he realized, "was Muskingum."

Today, Barrett's classroom reflects the same collaborative spirit that defines scientific discovery itself. He reminds students that science has always been a shared endeavor, with progress built through questions, experimentation, and the willingness to learn from one another.

That philosophy extends beyond the laboratory.

An accomplished ceramic artist, Barrett often points to the connections between science and art, noting that both disciplines require creativity, experimentation, and an appreciation for process. He encourages students to explore interests outside their majors, believing that unexpected connections often lead to the greatest discoveries.

Whether advising future physicians, engineers, or researchers, Barrett hopes students leave Muskingum with more than technical knowledge. He wants them to remain curious, embrace collaboration, and recognize that learning is a lifelong pursuit.

As the recipient of the William Rainey Harper Award for Outstanding Scholarship, Barrett joins a distinguished group of Muskingum faculty recognized for advancing knowledge and inspiring future generations.

For Barrett, however, the award represents something larger than individual achievement.

"None of this happens alone," he said. "Scholarship is about community."
