Jeff Ge, professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, was honored with theASME Machine Design Award by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

Known as "the most prestigious award in the field of machine design," Ge was honored by the recognition. "This is the highest accoladein the machine design field," said Ge. "I am tremendously honored and humbled by what this award represents."

The Machine Design Award, established in 1958, honors a person when deserved from the field, typically annually. Eligible contributions span a broad spectrum, including application, research, development and teaching in machine design. Awardees receive $1,000, a plaque and a certificate.

"I am pleased but not surprised to see Jeff honored for his leadership and advancement of the field of machine design," said P. Scott Carney, chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. "His scholarly contributions to computer-aided design and his breakthrough insights have led the field and placed Stony Brook University's mechanical engineering program on a world stage. His ongoing service as an editor-in-chief affirms our place there."

Ge joined Stony Brook University's Department of Mechanical Engineering in 1993, where he has held multiple leadership roles, including chair. His research focuses on the intersection of CAD/CAM, machine design, and robotics, with emphasis on geometry and motion.

"This award is also a recognition for the contributions of all of my former and current students and collaborators," said Ge. "I now have an even stronger sense of responsibility to continue this legacy, and to keep pushing the state of art in machine design and its impact on solving real world problems to improve quality of life."

Ge is also a Fellow of ASME and he has chaired major committees within ASME and IFToMM. He has served as co-editor of the ASME Journal of Mechanical Design(2021-24), and is the founding Editor-in-Chief of ASME Letters in Translational Robotics.

Other honors include the ASME Mechanisms and Robotics Award (2021) and the ASME AT Yang Memorial Award in Theoretical Kinematics (2022 and 2025).

"Reading the list of past recipients has been a humbling experience," said Ge. "I have read the machine design textbooks written by some of the recipients when I was an undergraduate student. Both my doctoral thesis advisor and my postdoctoral advisor are also on the list. I feel my work is now part of a larger and continuing legacy that includes not only the work of the award recipients but also those of their students and collaborators."
