Fiddlehead ferns, like these, are a wild, edible plant commonly found in Southeast Alaska in the spring.

A workshop in Juneau will take participants on a walk through the woods tosustainably gather wild, edible plants and prepare them for a meal.

Sarah Lewis, a University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service professor, and Southeast Alaska foraging expert and author Corinne Conlon will lead the workshop, from 1-7 p.m. on Saturday, April 25.

From 1-3 p.m., participants will learn about and forage for edible plants in wild areas in the Juneau area. The location will depend on weather conditions, and participants will be notified in advance. They should expect moderate wilderness hiking up and down slopes and wet, cold conditions. They'll find nettles, fireweed shoots, devil's club shoots, violets and other emerging buds and shoots.

From 4-7 p.m., participants will take the results of their foraging efforts to Chapel by the Lake, 11024 Auke Lake Way, Juneau, to create and share a meal of wild plants.

The cost is $80. To register, use the online formor visit https://bit.ly/JuneauWildWalk.

Youths under 16 may attend with an adult.
