The University of California leads all universities in one of science's highest honors: UC has the most newly elected fellows to the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world's largest general scientific society.
Founded in 1848, AAAS is a nonprofit and one of the most prestigious scientific societies in the world, publishing the Science family of peer-reviewed research journals. The election of the new fellows, the Class of 2025, was announced on March 26.
11 percent - more than 1 in 10 - of AAAS' 2025 fellows are affiliated with UC.
UC's 50 new fellows encompass each of the system's 10 campuses and two of the national labs.
| Campus | Fellows |
| UC Berkeley | 11 |
| UC Davis | 4 |
| UC Irvine | 7 |
| UCLA | 4 |
| UC Merced | 2 |
| UC Riverside | 2 |
| UC San Diego | 8 |
| UC San Francisco | 3 |
| UC Santa Barbara | 4 |
| UC Santa Cruz | 2 |
| Berkeley Lab | 3* |
| Livermore Lab | 2 |
*2 of the 3 scientists affiliated with Berkeley Lab are also affiliated with UC Berkeley.
AAAS honorary fellowship recognizes scientists, engineers and innovators for scientific achievements in service to society.
Election as a fellow requires a significant record of cross-disciplinary achievement and approval by the AAAS Council.
Being a fellow is a lifelong honor.
This year's 2025 class of fellows includes 449 scientists across the country.
Famous AAAS fellows include UC Nobelists Jennifer Doudna and Barry Barish.
Famous historical AAAS fellows include Thomas Edison, W.E.B DuBois, Grace Hopper and Maria Mitchell.
UC's 50 AAAS fellows benefit tremendously from federal funding for their research, across every scientific field.
Without this investment and partnership from the federal government, the nation would lose out on critical advancements - the very service to society AAAS fellowship honors.
Professor Yassa was elected for his groundbreaking discoveries about the brain that provide a basis for understanding cognitive decline in dementia and for developing a visionary model for training the next generation of neuroscientists. He is also the director of the UCI Center for Neurolobiology of Learning and Memory and a leader on the team that earned an unprecedented five-year, $109 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to expand research on the biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease in adults with Down syndrome.

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory director Kim Budil, a UC Davis alumna, leads the development and implementation of the laboratory's scientific vision, goals and objectives and serves as the laboratory's highest-level liaison with the Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration, the LLNS Board of Governors, the University of California and other government, public and private organizations.
Robert S. Maxwell, a UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara alumnus, was elected a fellow in recognition of nearly three decades of leadership and significant contributions in materials chemistry related to national security. Maxwell currently leads numerous high-consequence efforts at the lab in partnership with National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) production agencies, including the Polymer Enclave, which aims to accelerate product realization for specific components while demonstrating advanced manufacturing techniques that can be applied across the NNSA enterprise, enabling more rapid delivery and significant cost savings.
