LOS ANGELES - Mayor Karen Bass today issued the following statement:
"For the past three years, Measure ULA has raised funding for affordable housing development across L.A. and supported tens of thousands of Angelenos facing eviction and on the verge of homelessness - but more is needed. For several months now, I have called for an exemption for Palisades residents recovering from the devastating wildfires. And currently, there are threats to decrease or eliminate Measure ULA entirely.
"Measure ULA is a critical tool to help us address the housing and homelessness crisis and to build on our progress by bringing more affordable housing units into the pipeline. At the same time, Los Angeles has seen a two-year decline in street homelessness for the first time in City history. But all of this could soon be reversed.
"The Trump Administration has slashed homelessness funding and placed conditions on remaining funding. The State cut the Homeless Housing, Assistance and Prevention Grant in half, which L.A. has relied on to help reduce street homelessness. And the County diverted Measure A homelessness funding approved by voters to stand up a bureaucratic homelessness department. All while County department staff have stated that homelessness will increase.
"I ran for Mayor to address this decades-long crisis head on - to end street homelessness and to build permanent solutions. I won't give up on this. We need to address our funding gaps for critical interim housing, evaluate why multifamily and mixed-use production has stalled, and we must keep building.
"I am committed to bringing stakeholders together and looking at all opportunities to ensure Measure ULA remains a critical funding source to help us address Los Angeles' housing and homelessness crisis."
