CONTROLLED GOOSE HUNT AT HICKORY GROVE PARK
Story County Conservation (SCC) is offering a controlled goose hunt at Hickory Grove Park to reduce the numbers and amount of time geese use the lake as a fall and winter refuge. Large goose populations contribute to the bacterial level of the lake.
Hickory Grove Park is open for goose hunting during the following date ranges: September 27 - October 12, 2025, October 18 - December 9, 2025 and December 20, 2025 - January 17, 2026.
Hunting will be confined to the main lake and its shores except for the beach area, campground, north side of island waterfronts and the shoreline area at the east end of the lake by the public roadway and walking trail. Hunting hours are one-half hour before sunrise to 10:00 a.m. through October 31; then one-half hour before sunrise to sunset thereafter. All state and federal hunting laws apply. Hunters may use portable blinds, but gas boat motors are not allowed.
Hunting dates may be closed or modified by SCC. Hunters must report the number of geese harvested within 24 hours. Please contact the Park Ranger Olivia VanderHart at 515-598-2747 or email at [email protected] with harvest reports.
Story County Conservation manages more than 3,700 acres of parks and natural areas, including lakes, campgrounds and trails and an additional 5,500 acres of roadside habitat through its Integrated Roadside Vegetation Management program. The environmental education staff serves Story County schools and the public with interpretive and informational programs for all ages. SCC's volunteer program provides volunteer opportunities to individuals and groups interested in making a difference in local natural resources. No individual will be excluded from events conducted by SCC because of a disability or impairment.
