DNC Congratulates Abigail Spanberger on Her Resounding Victory in Virginia’s Gubernatorial Election Arrow

Tonight, Democrat Abigail Spanberger soundly defeated Winsome Earle-Sears, flipping the governor's mansion blue and becoming the first woman governor of Virginia.

Throughout her campaign, Governor-elect Spanberger delivered a positive, compelling message, focusing on lowering costs, growing Virginia's economy, and strengthening Virginia's schools. She will be a leader for all Virginians and will never be afraid to stand up to the chaos coming out of Washington as it harms Virginians.

Governor-elect Spanberger's win is another sign that voters are rejecting Donald Trump and his Republican allies' extreme agenda that is raising health care and utility costs and destroying jobs.

DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:

"Across Virginia, Commonwealth voters made it clear what they were looking for from their next governor: lower costs, good jobs, affordable health care, and strong schools. And tonight, those same voters made it clear who they want to lead: Abigail Spanberger. Trump and the Republicans have been attacking the Virginia economy all year, but now they have to go through our Governor-elect, and she's going to stand her ground when it comes to Virginia families. She's going to fight for our jobs, our kids, and our rural communities every single day, because that's what Virginia elected her to do, that's what Abigail Spanberger stands for, and that's what Democrats everywhere stand for. With tonight's victory, Virginians also delivered a resounding rejection of the self-serving and corrupt Trump establishment. It's time for Republicans to cherish their short time in power - because Democrats are going to keep winning, and we have a vision for this country that's a lot bigger than building a ballroom."

Heading into tonight, Democrats had won or overperformed in 46 out of 47 key elections this year. Democrats will enter 2026 with strong momentum heading into the midterms, as the DNC continues to invest in organizing and building power across the country.
