Stay Warm and Protect Your Home This Weekend

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ (February 6, 2026) - As we prepare for another freezing weekend with temperatures expected to remain below 32°F for three days, remain vigilant to prevent pipes from freezing.

Here are some preventive measures:

  • Keep Heat On: Set thermostats to at least 55°F, even when away.
  • Let Faucets Drip: Allow cold water to trickle from faucets, especially those on exterior walls, to keep water moving.
  • Circulate Air: Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warm household air to reach pipes under sinks.
  • Insulate Pipes: Wrap exposed pipes in unheated areas with insulation or heat tape.
  • Seal Drafts: Seal gaps around windows, doors, and where pipes enter the home.
  • Outdoor Maintenance: Disconnect hoses and shut off outside water lines.

If pipes freeze:

  • Shut Off Water: Immediately turn off the main water valve to prevent flooding.
  • Thaw Pipes: Use a hair dryer, space heater, or hot water, but never an open flame.
  • Check for Leaks: Carefully inspect pipes for cracks once thawed.
