EU agricultural statistics – equines

EU agricultural statistics - equines

24.9.2025

Question for written answer E-003704/2025
to the Commission
Rule 144
Nina Carberry (PPE), Hilde Vautmans (Renew)

The European equine sector contributes significantly to key EU objectives, including sustainable agriculture, biodiversity, rural development, animal welfare and tourism. Since Regulation (EU) 2018/1091[1] came into force, horses and other equines have been excluded from official agricultural statistics. This has created a major data gap, limiting our understanding of the sector's economic, environmental and social value, and making it more difficult to design effective policies or provide targeted support.

How does the Commission plan to reintegrate horses and other equines into EU agricultural statistics in order to properly reflect the sector's contribution and ensure it is considered in future policy development?
