The Lincoln Police Department (LPD) Traffic Unit is now investigating after a pedestrian hit by a vehicle on Christmas Eve has died from her injuries.
56-year-old Jody Lund of Lincoln passed away on Friday, January 2, 2026, after being hospitalized since the crash. Our thoughts go out to her family and loved ones during this difficult time.
The crash will now be investigated as a Motor Vehicle Homicide. The Lancaster County Attorney's Office has been notified of Lund's passing and has agreed to postpone charging the citation written last week to 23-year-old Haileigh Kapke of Lincoln for Failure to Yield to allow for further investigative efforts.
This all stems from a crash that occurred on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, just after 3:30 p.m. near Pioneers Blvd. and Nebraska Parkway.
The preliminary investigation determined Kapke was driving her 2014 red Nissan Versa Note west on Pioneers Blvd. headed toward Nebraska Parkway when she struck Lund, who was crossing the road in the crosswalk. Lund was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, including a brain bleed.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call our non-emergency number at 402-441-6000. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 402-475-3600, report online at lincolncrimestoppers.com or download the free P3 app.
