Rep. Sykes: On Tax Day, Americans Are Paying More While Republicans Reward the Wealthy

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) marked Tax Day by calling out the growing cost-of-living crisis squeezing working families while President Trump and Republicans continue to prioritize tax breaks for the wealthy.

"As families file their taxes this year, they're finding their refunds don't go nearly as far as they were promised," said Rep. Sykes. "Instead of lowering costs, Republicans passed policies, like the One Big Ugly Bill, that made life more expensive, while giving massive tax breaks to billionaires, millionaires, and big corporations - and making those tax breaks permanent, while tax cuts for workers expire."

President Trump said he would lower costs on day one of his presidency and boost tax refunds. However, families can't take advantage of their returns because they are paying more for groceries, gas, housing, and health care. That's been driven by the president's lack of strategy when it comes to tariffs and Republicans' economic policies that have shifted costs onto consumers while ensuring the wealthiest Americans come out ahead.

Rep. Sykes is pushing a different approach focused on putting more money in the pockets of working families. Her Lower Your Taxes Act would expand key tax credits, including the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit, delivering meaningful, lasting relief to families. In addition, her No Tax on Overtime for All Workers Act would make sure workers, who were excluded from proposals like "no tax on tips" are included, while making this tax relief permanent so working families can count on it year after year. She is also a co-sponsor of the Tipped Income Protection and Support (TIPS) Act, reinforcing her commitment to protecting tipped workers and strengthening fair tax treatment for all workers.

Rep. Sykes is also working across the aisle through the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus' Tariffs, Trade, and Strategic Competition Working Group to lower costs, strengthen supply chains, and protect jobs in Ohio's 13th Congressional District.

She has also called for restoring Congress' role in setting trade policy and ending tariff policies that shift costs onto consumers.
