Washburn University Art Department to Host 146 Students from Kansas High Schools for High School Art Day October 17

Topeka, Kan. - One hundred and forty-six high school students will explore their passion for art at the annual Washburn University High School Art Day. These students will attend art workshops taught by Washburn art faculty and advanced Washburn University art education students. This event is hosted by the Washburn University Art Department. The workshops are open to pre-registered students only.

In conjunction with High School Art Day, these students enter one piece of artwork each in the juried High School Art Day Student exhibition from Oct. 7-17 in the art gallery of the Washburn University Art Building. The exhibition is available to view while the Art Building is open, 7:30 a.m.-6:45 p.m. Monday - Wednesday, and 7:30 a.m. - 8:45 p.m. Thursdays. There will be a reception 5 - 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

"High School Art Day and participating in an exhibition gives high school students the opportunity to experience what a college art program is like, specifically at Washburn," said Deena Amont, Catron Art Educator and public outreach lecturer for the art department, Washburn University. "It's a valuable opportunity for students to consider higher education in art as a pathway to a fulfilling career doing what they already are passionate about."

Students will check in at 8 a.m. and workshops begin at 9 a.m. Workshops will begin at 9, 10 and 11 a.m. before lunch at 12 p.m. The lunch and awards ceremony will take place from 12 -1 p.m. in Washburn Rooms A and B, in the Memorial Union. The featured guest speaker at the awards ceremony will be Washburn Art Department graduate Megan Caldwell, class of 2017, who is an art educator and artist. The day will wrap up with workshops at 1 and 2 p.m.

The 146 students registered represent 22 high schools from as close as Topeka High School and as far away as Uniontown High School which is 120-miles from Topeka.

This event is sponsored by the Washburn University College of Arts & Sciences, the Washburn University art faculty, Washburn University Admissions, the Ichabod Shop, Washburn University Center for Student Success & Retention, Washburn University Memorial Union, Washburn University Dining Services and Washburn's Mulvane Art Museum.
