U.S. Department of Education Assistant Secretary for Postsecondary Education Dr. David Barker Highlights Civics Education at “History Rocks!” Event in Washington

April 23, 2026

LIBERTY LAKE, WA - Yesterday, U.S. Department of Education Assistant Secretary for Postsecondary Education Dr. David Barker visited Liberty Launch Academy as part of the Department of Education's national History Rocks!Trail to Independence Tour, in celebration of America's upcoming 250th birthday. The Tour aims to strengthen civic literacy by helping students personally connect with America's founding principles.

Students in kindergarten through twelfth grades participated in interactive games designed to deepen their understanding of American history and civics and the important role Washington has played in our nation's history. The event opened with remarks from Founder and Chairman Luke Kjar, followed by Assistant Secretary Barker. Students explored themes of civic engagement, patriotism, and the shared responsibilities of citizenship.

"Washington has always been a place where the edge of the map meant opportunity, not uncertainty. From early expeditions to the industries shaping the future today, there is a throughline of people willing to try something new and see where it leads," said U.S. Department of Education Assistant Secretary for Postsecondary Education Dr. David Barker. "History Rocks! gives students a way to connect that mindset to the American story, not as something distant, but as something they are still writing themselves."
