Tulsa Animal Services Goes Big for Final Clear the Shelters Adoption Push

Big Bark Bash Aug. 29 Spotlights Adoptable Dogs 60 Pounds and Larger

Tulsa Animal Services (TAS) is going big for the final weekend of Clear the Shelters month with Big Bark Bash, a special adoption event Saturday, August 29, from noon to 6 p.m. at Tulsa Animal Services, 3031 N. Erie Ave.

Big Bark Bash will put some of TAS' biggest adoptable dogs front and center, highlighting dogs weighing 60 pounds and larger and giving Tulsans an opportunity to meet the larger-than-life personalities waiting for homes.

The event serves as TAS' final major adoption push during Clear the Shelters, the national pet adoption campaign taking place throughout August. Adoption fees remain waived for eligible pets through the end of the month.

"Big dogs can sometimes be overlooked, but they have just as much love, personality and potential to be incredible companions," Tulsa Animal Services Director Sherri Carrier said. "Big Bark Bash is our chance to put the spotlight on them and encourage people who have been thinking about adopting to come meet these dogs for themselves. Finding the right home for one of these dogs also creates space for us to help the next animal who needs us."

Large dogs can face additional challenges finding adoptive homes because of their size, housing restrictions, or misconceptions about how much space they need. TAS staff can help potential adopters meet dogs with a variety of personalities, ages, and energy levels to find a pet that fits their household and lifestyle.

Adoption fees will be waived as part of Clear the Shelters month. All TAS dog and cat adoptions include spay or neuter surgery, age-appropriate vaccinations, and microchip identification. Eligible animals also receive a City of Tulsa pet license.

Anyone considering adoption is encouraged to come prepared to spend time meeting animals and talking with TAS staff about which pet may be the right fit. Renters should confirm any pet, breed, or size restrictions with their landlord before adopting.

Animals are available on a first-come basis, and availability may change throughout the event as pets are adopted.

Big Bark Bash also comes during Best Friends Animal Society's Mega Adoption Event, Aug. 24-30. Participating shelters, including TAS, can receive reimbursement from Best Friends Animal Society for eligible fee-waived adoptions during the event, providing additional support for lifesaving work.

Clear the Shelters continues through Aug. 31.
