Colorado Democrats Welcome Defeat of Amendment 82

DENVER - The Colorado Democratic Party welcomes the defeat of Amendment 82, which would have established a constitutional right to purchase and sell natural gas.

Buying and selling natural gas is already legal in Colorado. Democrats opposed the amendment because of concerns that its broad language could give the industry new grounds to challenge protections for public health and the environment.

"Colorado families deserve affordable energy and clean air where they live," said Colorado Democratic Party Chair Shad Murib. "Putting new protections for the gas industry into our constitution would have made that work harder. We thank the neighbors and advocates who explained what was at stake and helped protect our ability to hold polluters accountable."
