The Workshop on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Initiatives for SME Development, hosted by the National Productivity Secretariat of Sri Lanka, took place in Colombo, Sri Lanka, from 9 to 12 December 2025. The workshop aimed to strengthen participants' understanding of ESG principles, address emerging regulatory expectations, and explore practical approaches to integrating ESG into small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) operations to support sustainability, productivity, and competitiveness.
Twenty-four participants from 13 APO members took part in the workshop, which featured interactive sessions led by three resource persons from Japan, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka. The program covered ESG fundamentals, regulatory developments, SME-focused implementation strategies, and case studies highlighting practical and incremental approaches to ESG adoption. Participants also visited Dilmah Ceylon Tea Company PLC and Good Market, where they observed how ESG principles are applied in conservation-based enterprises and social business ecosystems, linking environmental stewardship and governance practices with business performance.
The workshop highlighted the importance of tailoring ESG approaches to the specific realities of SMEs rather than applying models designed for large enterprises. Through discussions and site-based learning, participants gained clearer insights into how ESG can drive SME productivity and long-term resilience. The program also fostered peer exchange among APO members, encouraging continued dialogue and collaboration on advancing ESG practices in SME development.
