Heavy Rains Can Impact Wells and Septic Systems

Our region has experienced several days of heavy monsoon rains, with more rain possible in the coming days. Prolonged drought conditions may increase localized impacts from short, heavy rainfall events.

A little knowledge and preparation can help protect your well and septic systems:

• Know where your well and septic system are located and check their condition before severe weather occurs.
• If you are unsure about the condition of your systems, have them inspected by a qualified professional.
• Maintain and test your well regularly, including testing for total coliform and E. coli. Testing information is available from the La Plata County Public Health Department Water Lab at https://www.lpcgov.org/waterlab
• Watch your septic drain field after heavy rain. Standing water should drain after the rain stops. If the drain field is saturated or has standing water, limit water use in your home until the area has drained and dried.
• If your property is prone to flooding, use sandbags or concrete blocks to help divert water away from the uphill side of your well. Water should drain quickly away from the exposed, above-ground portion of the well.

La Plata County has sandbags available at no charge for county residents to assist property owners in protecting their property from potential flood damage. The sandbags are available at four locations around La Plata County and are provided on a self-serve fill basis; shovels may be provided but residents are advised to bring their own in case none are available. Sand and bags are available 24 hours a day at:

• La Plata County Fairgrounds (north lot near the rodeo arena), 2500 Main Ave., Durango,
• Upper Pine Fire Protection District Station 1, 75 South Clover Dr., Bayfield
• Ignacio High School, 315 Ignacio St, Ignacio
• Fort Lewis Mesa Fire District Station 1, 164 County Rd. 130 in Kline
