On 1 June, Vilnius hosted political consultations between Lithuania and North Macedonia, led by Sigitas Mitkus, Lithuania's Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Zoran Dimitrovski, North Macedonia's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade.
The meeting focused on bilateral relations between Lithuania and North Macedonia, transatlantic relations, and support for Ukraine; presented the priorities and political agenda of Lithuania's Presidency of the Council of the European Union; and discussed EU enlargement and pre-accession issues. The Vice-Minister noted that it is necessary to maintain the credibility and speed of the enlargement process by supporting countries that implement the necessary reforms and adhere to European values.
"The EU enlargement will be among Lithuania's top priorities during the Presidency of the Council of the EU. Lithuania has consistently supported North Macedonia's bid to become a member of the European Union. We appreciate the significant progress made by the country and are confident that the implementation of the commitments and the continuation of reforms will help to move successfully towards EU membership", said the Vice-Minister.
Mitkus congratulated North Macedonia on the decision to open an embassy in Vilnius, which will further strengthen bilateral economic and political ties between the two NATO allies. The embassy will also open up more opportunities for cultural and scientific cooperation.
The participants of the meeting also discussed the strengthening of economic relations between Lithuania and North Macedonia, new trade and investment opportunities, and prospects for cooperation in the areas of information and communication technologies (ICT) and cyber security.
