Oral health vital component of cancer care

Emerging research underscores the systemic impact of oral health on overall well-being, particularly for women undergoing breast cancer treatment. Studies show that therapies such as chemotherapy, radiation, and hormone treatments often lead to oral complications including dry mouth (xerostomia), mucositis, glossodynia, and increased risk of oral infections^[1].

In addition to these side effects, scientific findings suggest a deeper biological connection between oral health and cancer development. Chronic periodontal inflammation has been linked to systemic inflammation, which is recognized as a contributing factor in cancer progression^[2]. Oral pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum have also been identified in breast tissue, indicating a potential microbial link between oral and breast health^[3].
