Dentsply Sirona Calls to Action on Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Research shows that oral health is critical for patiens undergoing breast-cancer treatment.

This October, Dentsply Sirona calls upon the dental community to recognize the vital role oral health plays in breast cancer care and commit to supporting women through innovation, education, and inclusive practices.

Charlotte, N.C. In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Dentsply Sirona reaffirms its commitment to advancing women's health through innovation, education, and inclusion. As the world's largest diversified manufacturer of professional dental products and technologies, the company is spotlighting the critical connection between oral health and breast cancer treatment - and the role dental professionals play in supporting patients in their treatment journey.

Oral health vital component of cancer care

Emerging research underscores the systemic impact of oral health on overall well-being, particularly for women undergoing breast cancer treatment. Studies show that therapies such as chemotherapy, radiation, and hormone treatments often lead to oral complications including dry mouth (xerostomia), mucositis, glossodynia, and increased risk of oral infections[1].

In addition to these side effects, scientific findings suggest a deeper biological connection between oral health and cancer development. Chronic periodontal inflammation has been linked to systemic inflammation, which is recognized as a contributing factor in cancer progression[2]. Oral pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum have also been identified in breast tissue, indicating a potential microbial link between oral and breast health[3].

To support early detection and proactive care of emerging oral health complications, Dentsply Sirona calls on dental professionals to lean into innovative tools that support early prevention and diagnosis. Advanced imaging solutions-including intraoral scanners like the Primescan can support dental professionals in providing timely, targeted care that supports patients throughout their treatment journey and that contributes to more holistic care.

Empowering Women in Dentistry

"Most of us know a woman who has battled breast cancer, and that personal connection reminds us of how critical it is to take broader, meaningful action. Supporting women - whether through clinical care, professional development, or inclusive workplaces - is central to our culture," says Andrea Frohning, SVP and Chief Human Resources Officer.

Beyond clinical innovation, Dentsply Sirona continues to support women in dentistry through strategic partnerships and internal initiatives. These efforts are part of the Company's global sustainability strategy, "BEYOND: Taking Action for a Brighter World" to ensure equitable treatment and opportunities for all.

As a founding member of Women in DSO®, a platform to advance and promote women leaders across the Dental Support Organization (DSO) space, the company supports mentorship, leadership development, and speaker training programs such as First to 50 and She's Prime, which elevate female voices in digital dentistry.

As outlined in Dentsply Sirona's 2024 Sustainability Report, the Company achieved internally total average gender pay parity and supported numerous initiatives aimed at expanding access to oral health worldwide.

Join the Movement

As Breast Cancer Awareness Month continues, Dentsply Sirona invites dental professionals and communities worldwide to take part in raising awareness - not only through clinical excellence and advocacy, but also through symbolic support.
