The President of the Government of Spain emphasises that the agreement reached between Ford and Geely "represents the future" and demonstrates "Spain's ability to attract major investment" and to play a part in the transformations that are shaping the future of mobility.

During his visit to the Ford plant in Almussafes (Valencia), the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, highlighted the Government's commitment to sustainable mobility, which generates more industry and creates more stable, higher-skilled jobs. Also in attendance at the event were the Second Vice-President of the Government of Spain and Minister for Labour and Social Economy, Yolanda Díaz; the Minister for Industry and Tourism, Jordi Hereu; the Minister for Science, Innovation and Universities, Diana Morant; the President of the Valencian Regional Government, Juan Francisco Pérez Llorca; and the Government Delegate for the Valencian Community, Pilar Bernabé.

At the start of his speech, Pedro Sánchez recalled that less than two years ago, the Dana storm "hit the area with great force" and "today we are meeting to discuss recovery, confidence, growth and prosperity, not only for this province, but for the whole of the Valencian Community". The head of the Executive thanked the US company Ford and the Chinese automotive group Geerly, including their executives and the Almussafes plant workforce - "the heart and soul of this factory" - for reaching an agreement to manufacture more vehicles that "represent the future".

The partnership, he emphasised, demonstrates "Spain's ability to attract major investment and to play a part in the transformations that are shaping the future of mobility", and is "crucial" at a time characterised by electrification, digitalisation and global competition in the automotive sector.

Spain is on the right track in its transition to sustainable mobility. "Change is underway. Our aim is clear: for this transformation to result in more industry, more businesses, and more stable, high-skilled jobs with better prospects", said the President of the Government of Spain, whilst emphasising that the Government of Spain has "thrown itself" into driving this transformation forward in recent years. To this end, the PERTE for Electric and Connected Vehicles has been rolled out, mobilising over €4.8 billion to attract investment, boost innovation and strengthen the entire value chain. Furthermore, the Government has drawn up the Auto 2030 Plan, in collaboration with the entire sector, to ensure that "the energy transition, and therefore sustainability, also serves as an asset for reindustrialisation and the strengthening of Spain's leadership in Europe".

Regarding the future plans for the Valencian factory, Pedro Sánchez praised "the collective effort" made by the Almussafes plant to maintain its competitiveness and prepare for a new phase. This effort has been backed by the Government of Spain through support policies such as the first territorial RED Mechanism, "which we are extending until the end of 2026". "Thanks to this scheme, which has cost around €45 million, Ford and its main suppliers have been able to safeguard jobs, provide training for around 4,000 workers and support the transition to new production processes". And we are continuing to work with the Valencian Community to find a battery assembly project by 2026", he added.

In short, "this plant in Almussafes is the finest example of an economic and industrial policy that places public-private partnership and industrial decarbonisation at the heart of the agenda and as the main pillars of the present and future competitiveness of the automotive industry in Spain".

The President of the Government of Spain concluded by noting that today "we are reaping the rewards of this shared commitment in the best possible way, and this is the realisation of an investment that demonstrates confidence", in this plant, in the Valencian Community and in Spanish industry, and, above all, in the workers at the Almussafes plant. This agreement, he said, "marks the start of a new era, with more innovation, greater technological capacity, more opportunities, more high-quality jobs and also greater sustainability".
