Newburyport Bank Charitable Foundation Highlights Commitment to Community Giving

Foundation has awarded $690,500 to nonprofit organizations in 2026 and more than $5.7 million since 2003

In recognition of National Nonprofit Day, Newburyport Bank and the Newburyport Bank Charitable Foundation (NBCF) are celebrating the nonprofit organizations and community partners whose work strengthens the lives of individuals and families throughout the greater Newburyport, Merrimack Valley, and Seacoast regions.

Giving back has been a cornerstone of Newburyport Bank's commitment to the communities it serves for generations. As a mutual bank, Newburyport Bank measures its success not only by financial performance, but by the strength and vitality of the communities it calls home. The Newburyport Bank Charitable Foundation is an important part of that commitment, providing strategic philanthropic support to organizations addressing critical needs and creating opportunities for individuals and families to thrive.

Since its inception in 2003, the Foundation has awarded more than $5.7 million in grants to nonprofit organizations across the region. In 2026 alone, NBCF has committed $690,500 in support of organizations working in areas including housing, healthcare, education, youth development, veteran services, mental health, and community enrichment.

"Giving is at the center of who we are as a community bank, and the Foundation allows us to extend that commitment in meaningful and lasting ways," said Jim McCarthy, President and Chief Operating Officer for Newburyport Bank and President of the NBCF. "Every grant represents a partnership with an organization that understands the needs of our communities and is working every day to make a difference. We are proud to support their work and grateful for the impact they have on the people and communities we serve."

The Foundation's most recent round of grants, approved at its June meeting, provides a snapshot of the breadth of its philanthropic focus. The $119,500 awarded to 21 nonprofit organizations supports programs ranging from veteran services and healthcare to youth development, mental health, education, arts and culture, and community events.

Among the June recipients were the 1st Lt. Derek Hines Soldier's Assistance Fund and Victoria's Victory Foundation, supporting the Foundation's commitment to veterans and their families; Lucy's Love Bus, which provides free integrative therapies to children and young adults with cancer and their families; and the Krempels Brain Injury Center, advancing support for individuals and families affected by brain injury. A grant to Amesbury Public Schools will support a therapeutic riding program for middle and high school students with developmental disabilities, while funding for the John Ashford Link House will expand mental health and substance-use treatment coordination for youth.

Other recent grants support the region's cultural and civic life, including the Gundalow Company's free Piscataqua Riverfest, the Newburyport Art Association's expanded programming for youth, veterans, and older adults, and Yankee Homecoming's annual community celebration.

While the Foundation's grantmaking is an important part of Newburyport Bank's overall community commitment, its impact extends well beyond financial contributions. Together with its affiliated banks, Pentucket Bank and Rollstone Bank & Trust, River Run contributed more than $1.6 million in charitable donations and grants in 2025, while employees volunteered nearly 8,162 hours in service to 562 nonprofit organizations.

"The strength of our communities is built through partnership," McCarthy added. "Nonprofit organizations bring expertise, passion, and an understanding of the needs right in our own neighborhoods. Our role is to help support that work-through charitable giving, volunteerism, and long-term partnerships that help communities continue to grow and thrive."

The Newburyport Bank Charitable Foundation meets quarterly to review grant requests from eligible 501(c)(3) organizations, seeking opportunities to invest in programs and initiatives that create meaningful and lasting community impact. Organizations interested in applying for future funding may submit an application through the Foundation's online grant portal. Applications are accepted year-round, and organizations should allow approximately two weeks for review.
