Cary System Pressure Advisory Lifted Following N.C. 55 Water Main Break

CARY, NC - Bacteriological testing conducted following Monday's 30-inch water main break on N.C. 55 has confirmed that water is safe for normal use, and Cary has lifted the System Pressure Advisory for affected water customers. Water samples collected from the affected area were tested for bacteriological contamination following the loss of system pressure. Results received early Tuesday morning from 14 samples were absent of bacteria, allowing Cary to lift the System Pressure Advisory effective at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 15.

Affected customers may resume normal water use. Customers may have air in their pipes and should run water for roughly one minute to flush. Flush lines to all water using fixtures, such as beverage dispensers, coffee makers, ice machines, and water fountains. Dispose of any ice and beverages made during the advisory using tap water.

No water quality issues were observed or detected during the advisory other than discoloration.

"We appreciate our customers' patience and cooperation while our crews worked around the clock to make repairs and ensure our water system was safe," said Cary Utilities Director Jamie Revels. "We're grateful to our staff and partners who worked quickly to restore normal service to our community.

Shortly after midnight Monday, Cary crews responded to N.C. 55 near Jenks Road/Old Jenks Road to a major water main break. By 4 a.m., the break was isolated; however, because of a brief drop in pressure and in accordance to guidance from the NC Division of Water Resources, a System Pressure Advisory was issued. N.C. 55 partially reopened to drivers by noon Monday and remains open with two northbound lanes and one southbound lane between the Jenks Road/Old Jenks Road intersection and the Lewey Drive/Turner Creek Road intersection. Crews remain on-site, and drivers should use caution and expect delays while traveling through the area. As a precaution, Cary temporarily closed all Town spraygrounds and fountain structures while the System Pressure Advisory was in effect; all spraygrounds and fountains are resuming normal operations.
