Shore Medical Center to Offer Free Lung Cancer Screening Consultations December 5 for Eligible Current and Former Smokers

Shore Medical Center, a member of the Penn Cancer Network, will host a free lung cancer screening event on Saturday, December 5, 2026, from 9 a.m. to noon at Shore Cancer Center in Somers Point. The event is designed to help eligible current and former smokers determine whether a low-dose CT (LDCT) scan is right for them.

Participants will receive a free consultation with Penn Medicine interventional pulmonologist Upendra Dhanjal, MD, of Penn Pulmonary Medicine in Somers Point. Dr. Dhanjal will assess each participant's lung cancer risk and determine whether a low-dose CT screening is appropriate. Those who qualify will be scheduled for a screening at Advanced Shore Imaging Associates in Northfield on a day and time convenient for them at no cost.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. Because lung cancer often develops without noticeable symptoms in its early stages, screening is especially important for people at increased risk. Low-dose CT scans can detect lung cancer early, when it is most treatable.

Adults ages 50 to 80 who currently smoke or have quit smoking within the past 15 years may be eligible for screening. Screening guidelines also consider smoking history, generally recommending LDCT for individuals with at least a 20 pack-year history (equivalent to smoking one pack per day for 20 years or two packs per day for 10 years).

Appointments are required for the December 5 event. Individuals interested in learning more or scheduling a free consultation should call 609-653-3440.

Through this event, Shore Medical Center, Penn Pulmonary Medicine Somers Point and Advanced Shore Imaging Associates are working together to make potentially lifesaving lung cancer screening more accessible to the South Jersey community.
