Frostburg State University Partners with University of Maryland School of Pharmacy to Create Accelerated PharmD Pathway

Frostburg State University (FSU) and the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy (UMSOP) have entered into a new partnership that will provide qualified students with an accelerated pathway to earn both a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree.

The agreement establishes a 3+4 pathway that enables students to complete both degrees in seven years instead of the traditional eight, reducing both the time and cost required to prepare for a career in pharmacy.

"This partnership represents our commitment to providing students with innovative pathways that remove barriers to achieving their academic and professional goals," said FSU Provost Dr. Michael Mathias.

The program is designed for Frostburg students pursuing careers in pharmacy. Participants will complete at least 98 credits toward their chemistry degree at FSU, including all prerequisite coursework for admission to the PharmD program. Students will apply to UMSOP during their junior year.

Upon successfully completing the first year of the PharmD curriculum, students will transfer designated pharmacy coursework back to FSU to fulfill the remaining requirements for their bachelor's degree. They will then continue at UMSOP to complete the final three years of the PharmD program.

By allowing first-year pharmacy coursework to count toward the undergraduate degree, students can earn both credentials through a streamlined academic pathway.

"Our chemistry program has a long tradition of preparing students for success in rigorous health professions, and this partnership creates an even stronger pathway for those who aspire to become pharmacists," said Interim Dean of FSU's College of Humanities, Arts and Sciences Dr. Steven Combs. "This collaboration with the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy not only expands opportunities for students but also helps develop the next generation of highly skilled healthcare professionals."

Qualified FSU students who meet the program requirements and apply by the final admission deadline will receive a guaranteed admission interview at UMSOP. The School of Pharmacy will also reserve five seats in each PharmD cohort for eligible FSU applicants. Admission to the PharmD program remains competitive and is based on completion of all prerequisites, a successful application, and an interview.

Students interested in the pathway are encouraged to declare their intent early and work closely with FSU chemistry advisors to ensure they complete the required coursework and meet application deadlines.

The partnership reflects the shared commitment of both University System of Maryland institutions to expanding access to high-quality educational opportunities while preparing graduates to meet the growing demand for healthcare professionals throughout Maryland and beyond.
