Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month

By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:

Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month

WHEREAS, cystic fibrosis is a life-threatening genetic disease that affects nearly 40,000 children and adults in the United States, with approximately 800 Virginians currently living with cystic fibrosis; and

WHEREAS, cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder that causes the body to produce thick, sticky mucus that makes it extremely difficult for people with the condition to breathe and leads to life-threatening infections; and

WHEREAS, half of all children with cystic fibrosis and a third of all adults with cystic fibrosis rely on Medicaid to afford the treatments and care they need to live a healthy life; and

WHEREAS, advancements in specialized cystic fibrosis care have extended and improved the quality of life for those living with the disease, yet there is still no cure and too many lives are lost too soon; and

WHEREAS, increasing public awareness fosters early diagnosis, improves access to care, and strengthens support for research, improved therapies, and work toward a cure;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Abigail D. Spanberger, do hereby recognize May 2026, as CYSTIC FIBROSIS AWARENESS MONTH in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
